Pre-AP at GLS
Build the Foundation Before the Challenge
The pathway to advanced academic success begins with a deliberate foundation. Pre-AP at GLS provides students with the specific cognitive tools, inquiry-based habits, and analytical stamina required for the rigors of Advanced Placement coursework and beyond.
By engaging with complex materials and evidence-based reasoning earlier in their academic careers, our students move from passive learning to active discovery, ensuring they are prepared when the challenge arrives.

AP Readiness Starts Before AP
GLS takes a deliberate approach to student success. Our Pre-AP pathways are built using backward design from AP expectations, ensuring that the habits of mind required for college-level work are nurtured early and consistently.
Think Critically
Analyze complex ideas and develop logical reasoning through structured inquiry.
Read & Observe Closely
Focus on deep comprehension and the ability to extract meaning from diverse sources.
Explain With Evidence
Construct strong arguments supported by verifiable data and textual support.
Solve Complex Problems
Apply mathematical and scientific reasoning to multi-step challenges.
From Foundation to Advanced Study
The GLS Academic Pathway is a deliberate progression designed to move students from foundational skills to advanced academic success. By introducing Pre-AP frameworks early, we ensure that students are not just taking harder classes, but developing the cognitive stamina and analytical tools required for the most challenging at-grade level and advanced coursework.

Pre-AP is not AP coursework at a younger age. It is preparation for the thinking students will need when advanced coursework begins.
Designed With AP in Mind
Pre-AP frameworks are back-mapped from AP expectations.
PRE-AP
- Build foundational knowledge
- Develop critical-thinking habits
- Practice evidence-based reasoning
- Strengthen academic communication
AP
- Apply those skills at greater depth
- Analyze increasingly complex material
- Complete advanced academic tasks
- Prepare for college-level expectations
Less Memorization. More Thinking.
Close Observation & Analysis
Students are taught to notice details, whether in a complex math problem, a scientific data set, or a primary source text. They learn to slow down, look carefully, and build a base of evidence before drawing conclusions.
Evidence-Based Reasoning
It is not enough to know the right answer; students must prove how they got there. Pre-AP emphasizes the bridge between a claim and the evidence that supports it, a critical skill for College Board exams and university writing.
Higher-Order Questions
We move past rote recall toward evaluation and synthesis. Students grapple with questions that have no single "correct" pathway, requiring them to think flexibly and apply knowledge to new and unfamiliar contexts.
Academic Communication
Academic success depends on the ability to share ideas clearly. Students practice communicating their findings through precise writing, collaborative discussion, and structured presentations, preparing them for the rigors of AP and beyond.

What Pre-AP Is — and Is Not
Pre-AP is not AP coursework at a younger age. While AP courses introduce specific college-level content and exam preparation, Pre-AP focuses on the foundational habits and thinking skills students will need across all advanced subjects.
The framework is designed to build cognitive stamina and evidence-based reasoning. It acts as a bridge, ensuring that when students reach the rigor of the AP level, they are not seeing these high-order tasks for the first time.
At GLS, we use these frameworks to create vertical academic alignment, meaning our middle school and early high school curricula are deliberately back-mapped from the skills required for university success.
Build the Foundation for What Comes Next.
Success in advanced coursework is built on the cognitive habits and skills developed early. Individualized academic planning at GLS ensures every student has a deliberate, manageable pathway from foundational study to AP excellence and college readiness.
